Nikon's modern nifty fifty with AF-S motor, the 50mm every Nikon shooter should own.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G launched in 2011 as the modern replacement for the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D. By adding an internal AF-S motor it autofocuses on every Nikon body including entry-level models that lack a body-driven AF motor. It became Nikon's most recommended first prime.
Optical quality is good with sharp results from f/2.2 and usable wide open at f/1.8. Bokeh from seven rounded aperture blades is smooth and pleasing. AF-S motor is quiet and responsive. Build is lightweight plastic at 185g. The M/A switch enables instant manual focus override.
Nikon F mount, 58mm filter thread. Full-frame coverage works on both FX and DX. On DX it provides a 75mm equivalent portrait perspective. The Z 50mm f/1.8 S is dramatically better optically for mirrorless. The AF 50mm f/1.8D is cheaper but won't AF on entry-level bodies.
Outstanding value used. Check AF motor and aperture blades. At used prices this is an essential purchase for any Nikon shooter. The improvement over kit zoom sharpness and low-light capability is transformative for beginners.
