Nikon's finest F-mount telephoto zoom with VR, fluorine coating, and electromagnetic aperture.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR was released in 2016 as Nikon's third-generation professional 70-200mm f/2.8 for F-mount, adding electromagnetic aperture control ('E' designation) for full compatibility with cameras using electronic aperture — required on the D5, D500, and later bodies for exposure accuracy at high burst rates. The 'FL' designation indicates a fluorite element; alongside six ED elements it represents the most advanced glass formula in the Nikon F-mount 70-200mm lineup. NANO Crystal Coat and new fluorine coating are applied to the front element.
The optical design uses 22 elements in 18 groups, including six ED elements and one fluorite element for superior chromatic aberration control. Nine aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 77mm filter thread is consistent with the previous 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II for filter carry-over. At approximately 1,430g without the tripod mount the lens is substantial for professional telephoto use; a monopod is practical for sustained sessions. Minimum focus distance of 1.1m. VR (Vibration Reduction) is built in for handheld telephoto use. Weather sealing is built in throughout.
The electromagnetic aperture ('E') design is the primary compatibility-driven reason to choose this version over the previous VR II: professional Nikon bodies from the D5 and D500 generation onward achieve most accurate exposure tracking with electronic aperture control rather than mechanical coupling. The fluorite element and additional ED elements produce optical improvements at wide apertures versus the VR II, particularly in chromatic aberration and corner performance. For wildlife, sports, and events on current Nikon F-mount professional bodies, the 'E' version is the current reference standard.
On the used market the 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR commands a premium over the VR II. Condition checks: VR operation (confirm stabilised viewfinder output), electromagnetic aperture operation (verify correct exposure in burst mode on compatible bodies), weather sealing at the barrel, and front element for any coating marks. The 77mm filter thread is consistent with the previous VR II generation. Via FTZ adapter the lens autofocuses on Nikon Z bodies. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount DSLR bodies; for full electronic aperture operation, the D5/D500/D750 and later generations are required.
