Nikon's popular full-frame telephoto zoom with VR — the affordable 70-300mm workhorse.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR was released in 2006 and became one of Nikon's most popular telephoto zooms. Covering 70-300mm on full frame with VR stabilisation, it offered a massive step up from budget telephoto options. It was the default recommendation for Nikon shooters wanting affordable telephoto reach with stabilisation for over a decade.
Optical performance is good for the class. Sharpness is very good from 70-200mm and respectable at 300mm, though some softening is visible at the extreme end. The ED element controls chromatic aberration well. VR stabilisation provides approximately 3-4 stops of correction, making handheld 300mm shooting practical. AF-S motor is fast and quiet.
Nikon F mount, full-frame coverage. Filter thread is 67mm. Weight is approximately 745 grams — moderate for a 300mm zoom. Build quality is good with a solid feel above kit-class quality. No weather sealing. The HB-36 hood is included. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount bodies with electronic contacts.
Very common on the used market at reasonable prices. Check for smooth VR operation and AF accuracy. The AF-P DX 70-300mm and AF-P FX 70-300mm are newer alternatives with improved AF motors. This lens remains a solid performer and excellent value for Nikon DSLR shooters wanting versatile telephoto reach.
