Nikon's AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8 — the two-ring version with internal AF motor, a pro classic.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D Two Touch launched in 1999 as the first 80-200mm f/2.8 with Nikon's AF-S (Silent Wave Motor) — built-in autofocus motor. The 'Two Touch' refers to separate zoom and focus rings replacing the earlier push-pull design.
Optically very good — sharp throughout with constant f/2.8. The AF-S motor was a significant upgrade over body-driven AF — faster, quieter, and works on all Nikon DSLRs including entry models. ED glass for chromatic aberration control.
Nikon F mount with 77mm filter thread. Approximately 1300g. No VR stabilisation. Full-frame coverage. Tripod collar. The separate zoom and focus rings are more precise and less prone to dust than push-pull designs. Minimum focus distance 150cm.
Available used at mid-range prices. The 70-200mm VR versions are the successors and add stabilisation. The 80-200mm AF-S remains optically excellent and is cheaper. For Nikon users wanting a constant f/2.8 telephoto without needing VR. Check for smooth AF motor operation.
