Nikon's modern 80-400mm for F-mount — AF-S VR with gold-ring quality for wildlife and sports.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR was released in 2013 as the second-generation 80-400mm, substantially redesigning the original AF 80-400mm D (2000) with AF-S silent wave motor, VR II stabilisation, and a new optical formula. Designed for wildlife, sports, and travel telephoto photography. Nikon F mount.
f/4.5-5.6 variable aperture. 20 elements in 14 groups, including ED elements. VR II (approximately four-stop correction). AF-S silent wave motor. 77mm filter thread. At approximately 1,570g. Minimum focus 1.75m. Nikon F mount.
The VR II system provides approximately four stops of stabilisation correction, enabling handheld shooting at the 400mm end at speeds that would otherwise require a tripod. The AF-S motor is substantially faster for tracking moving subjects than the body-driven AF of the original 80-400mm D. Compatible with Nikon TC-14E and TC-20E teleconverters.
On the used market the Nikon AF-S 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is a versatile full-frame telephoto zoom for wildlife and travel. Condition checks: VR engagement (listen for stabiliser activation and test for drift), AF speed and accuracy at 400mm, 77mm front element for marks, zoom ring smoothness across full range. Compatible with Nikon Z bodies via FTZ adapter.
