Nikon's excellent AF-S 85mm f/1.8 portrait prime — sharp, fast AF, and outstanding value for the quality.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G launched in 2012 as a major upgrade over the 85mm f/1.8D, adding AF-S Silent Wave Motor and rounded aperture blades. It quickly became one of the most recommended portrait lenses for Nikon F-mount due to excellent optics at a reasonable price.
Optically very good — sharp from f/2 with excellent rendering. The 7 rounded aperture blades produce smoother bokeh than the D version's non-rounded blades. AF-S motor is fast, quiet, and works on all Nikon DSLRs. Good close-up performance.
Nikon F mount with 67mm filter thread. Weighs 350g — remarkably light. No VR stabilisation. Full-frame coverage. G-type — electronic aperture control. Minimum focus distance 80cm. Super Integrated Coating for flare control.
Available used at budget to mid-range prices — exceptional value. One of the best portrait lens bargains in photography. The 85mm f/1.4G is faster with better bokeh but costs 3-4x more. Works on Z bodies via FTZ adapter. Outstanding value for portrait photographers.
