Nikon's superzoom bridge camera with massive optical zoom range, ideal for wildlife enthusiasts on a budget.
The Nikon Coolpix P1000 was released in August 2018 as the successor to the P900, extending the optical zoom from 83x (24-2000mm equivalent) to 125x covering 24-3000mm equivalent — the longest optical zoom range of any consumer camera. It also added 4K/30fps video recording, which the P900 had lacked. A 0.2-inch electronic viewfinder provides practical framing at extreme telephoto distances. The 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor is the same size class as the P900.
The 16MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor records 4K at up to 30fps and 1080p at up to 60fps. The 125x optical zoom covers 24-3000mm equivalent at variable aperture f/2.8-8.0. Optical Vibration Reduction is built in for telephoto stability. The 0.2-inch EVF provides framing at extreme reach where rear LCD aiming is impractical. GPS is not included (unlike the P900). Battery life approximately 250 shots using the EN-EL20a, body weight approximately 505g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The 3000mm equivalent reach is the P1000's defining specification: at this focal length, lunar surface craters, distant aircraft in flight, and wildlife at extreme range become framing subjects. At 3000mm the EVF is a practical necessity — rear LCD framing at this magnification provides insufficient stability and precision for subject acquisition. The 4K/30fps upgrade over the P900 enables high-resolution documentary video of distant subjects within the long-zoom reach.
On the used market the P1000 is available at specialist superzoom pricing. Condition checks: 125x zoom mechanism smoothness, EVF display for uniformity, and EN-EL20a battery health. At 3000mm, atmospheric haze and heat shimmer become the practical limiting factors before sensor resolution. The Nikon P950 provides a lighter 83x 24-2000mm option at lower cost. Fixed lens; no interchangeable mount.
