Nikon's extreme superzoom compact with an 83x optical zoom reaching 2000mm equivalent.

The Nikon Coolpix P900 was released in March 2015 as Nikon's flagship bridge superzoom, featuring an 83x optical zoom covering 24-2000mm equivalent — the longest zoom range in any bridge camera at launch. Built-in GPS enables geotagging of images directly in-camera. A 0.2-inch 921k-dot electronic viewfinder provides accurate framing at extreme telephoto distances. 4K video is not supported; the P900 records 1080p at up to 30fps.

The 16MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor records 1080p video at up to 30fps. The built-in 24-2000mm f/2.8-6.5 zoom extends from standard wide to extreme super-telephoto. GPS and Wi-Fi are built in. The 0.2-inch EVF provides 921k-dot framing — practical at 2000mm equivalent where rear LCD framing is imprecise. Fully articulating rear screen enables low-angle and overhead shooting. Battery life approximately 360 shots using the EN-EL20a, body weight approximately 899g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.

The 2000mm equivalent reach is the P900's defining characteristic: moon surface detail, extremely distant wildlife, and stadium-far subjects that no interchangeable-lens system under any practical budget could reach. At 2000mm the built-in EVF is a practical requirement — rear LCD framing at this magnification is too imprecise for consistent subject acquisition. GPS geotagging is built in without an accessory, useful for travel and nature documentation where location data has archival value.

On the used market the P900 is affordable as a specialist extreme telephoto bridge camera. Condition checks: 83x zoom mechanism smoothness and barrel condition, EVF display for uniformity, and EN-EL20a battery health. The Nikon P1000 (2018) extended the zoom to 125x (24-3000mm equivalent) with 4K video. The 1/2.3-inch sensor limits image quality at high ISO and extreme telephoto distances where atmospheric haze becomes the limiting factor. Fixed lens; no interchangeable mount.
