Nikon's family waterproof compact — 13MP CMOS, 3x 30-90mm equiv, 10m waterproof, kid-friendly UI, 2014.
The Nikon Coolpix S32 was a family-oriented waterproof compact launched in March 2014 alongside the tougher AW120. Pitched as a camera the whole household — including children — could use, it combined a rugged sealed body with a deliberately simplified, large-icon interface, and was succeeded a year later by the very similar Coolpix S33.
It used a 13-megapixel CMOS sensor with a 3x zoom covering a 30-90mm equivalent range. The body was waterproof to 10m, shockproof to 1.5m drops and dustproof, with a 2.7-inch LCD behind a protective panel. Full HD 1080p video could be recorded, images went to SD cards, and power came from a proprietary rechargeable battery in a body of about 175g.
The S32 suits parents wanting a beach, pool and holiday camera that survives being dropped or dunked, and it remains popular as a first camera for children thanks to oversized buttons and a menu built around pictures rather than text. Image quality is basic snapshot grade, so it is a convenience and durability purchase rather than an image-quality one.
Waterproofing depends entirely on the door seals, so inspect the battery/card door gasket for grit or cracking and treat any claimed water-resistance on a decade-old body with caution. Confirm the proprietary battery holds charge and a charger or USB lead is included, and check the screen's protective cover for the scratches these hard-used family cameras often accumulate.
