Nikon's entry-level DX DSLR with Bluetooth and excellent battery life.
The Nikon D3400 was launched in 2016 as Nikon's entry-level DX DSLR. With a 24.2MP APS-C sensor without a low-pass filter and Bluetooth SnapBridge connectivity, it offered excellent image quality and modern connectivity at the most affordable price point in Nikon's DSLR range.
Key features include the 24.2MP sensor, 11-point AF system with 1 cross-type point, 5fps burst, 1080p video, and remarkable battery life rated at 1200 shots per charge. SnapBridge provides always-on Bluetooth transfer of images to a smartphone. There is no touchscreen, no Wi-Fi, and no articulating display.
The D3400 is praised for outstanding image quality from its 24MP filter-free sensor and exceptional battery life. It is criticised for the sparse 11-point AF system, lack of touchscreen, and the limited SnapBridge app which frustrated users at launch. Image quality per pound is exceptional.
Very cheap used. Check shutter count, AF point accuracy, and SnapBridge pairing. The D3500 is a marginal refinement with improved ergonomics. The D5600 adds a touchscreen and articulating screen for a modest premium. The D3400 remains an excellent budget option for its image quality.
