Nikon's improved D3 flagship — added HD video and higher ISO range while maintaining pro speed.
The Nikon D3S was released in 2009 as the successor to the D3, adding 720p/24fps HD video recording — the first D3-series body with video capability. 12.1MP full-frame CMOS. 9fps burst (11fps without AF). EN-EL4a battery (~4,200 shots CIPA). At 1,240g body only.
12.1MP full-frame CMOS. 720p (1280×720) at 24fps HD video (the D3 had no video). 9fps with AF; 11fps without AF. EN-EL4a battery (11.1V, 2500mAh; ~4,200 shots CIPA). 1,240g body only. Dual CF card slots. Nikon F full-frame (FX) mount.
The D3S's 720p/24fps video was the specific upgrade over the original D3 (which had no video recording). The D3S also improved high-ISO performance with the same 12.1MP sensor revised for better noise characteristics at extreme ISO settings. The professional EN-EL4a provides the highest shot count of any Nikon DSLR battery of the era.
On the used market the Nikon D3S is affordable as a vintage professional full-frame DSLR. Condition checks: shutter actuations, EN-EL4a battery health, CF card slot condition. 720p/24fps video only. Compatible with all Nikon F-mount FX and DX lenses.
