Nikon's improved D3 flagship — added HD video and higher ISO range while maintaining pro speed.
The Nikon D3S launched in 2009 as an update to the groundbreaking D3, adding HD video recording and extending the native ISO range to 12800 (expandable to 102400). It maintained the D3's legendary AF and speed while addressing the two main criticisms.
The 12.1MP full-frame CMOS sensor further improved high-ISO — clean to ISO 12800, with usable results at ISO 102400 in extended mode. 51-point AF with 15 cross-type sensors. 9fps FX / 11fps DX crop. 720p HD video added — D3's biggest omission.
Identical tank-like body to the D3. Magnesium alloy with full weather sealing. Dual CF card slots. 3-inch LCD at 920k dots. Integrated vertical grip. 1240g. 300,000-cycle shutter. EXPEED processor.
Available used at mid-range prices. The D3S addressed the D3's lack of video and improved an already incredible ISO range. The D4 pushed to 16.2MP and Full HD video. For professional sports and news photographers who need ultimate low-light capability. Check shutter count.
