Nikon's flagship full-frame DSLR from 2012 — 16.2MP with 91K metering and improved AF.
The Nikon D4 launched in 2012 as Nikon's flagship professional DSLR, succeeding the D3S with improved AF algorithms, 91,000-pixel metering, and Full HD 1080p video at all frame rates. It was the workhorse for the 2012 Olympics.
The 16.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor maintained the D3S emphasis on speed and high-ISO over resolution. Clean to ISO 12800. 51-point AF with improved 3D tracking. 10fps burst at FX. 91,000-pixel RGB metering — a major improvement.
Tank-like magnesium alloy body with integrated vertical grip. Dual XQD and CF card slots — first Nikon with XQD. 3.2-inch LCD at 921k dots. Full HD 1080p at 24/25/30fps. 1180g. 400,000-cycle shutter.
Available used at mid-range prices — good value for a professional flagship. The D4S improved to 11fps, and the D5 to 153-point AF and 12fps. 16.2MP feels low but the pixel-level quality is excellent. Check shutter count.
