Nikon's flagship full-frame DSLR from 2012 — 16.2MP with 91K metering and improved AF.
The Nikon D4 was released in January 2012 as Nikon's professional flagship full-frame DSLR, featuring a 16.2MP sensor optimised for high ISO performance and 11fps continuous shooting speed — designed for photojournalism and sports photography. Nikon F mount.
16.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor. ISO 100-12800 (native), expandable to Hi 4 (204,800). 11fps continuous. Weather-sealed magnesium-alloy body. Dual CompactFlash and XQD card slots. Built-in 10/100 Ethernet. At approximately 1,340g. Nikon F mount.
The D4 prioritised speed and high-ISO sensitivity over resolution — 16.2MP versus the D800's 36.3MP released the same year. The XQD card slot was the first appearance of XQD in a Nikon body. Built-in Ethernet enabled direct wireless FTP file transfer for wire-service photojournalists. The D4S (2014) updated the D4 with improved ISO performance and autofocus.
On the used market the Nikon D4 is a professional flagship DSLR with low resolution by current standards but excellent high-ISO performance for its era. Condition checks: shutter actuation count (rated 400,000), dual card slots, Ethernet port, weather sealing, battery health (EN-EL18). Nikon F mount.
