Nikon's entry-level DX DSLR with a vari-angle screen and 16.2MP sensor.
The Nikon D5100 launched in 2011 as Nikon's first entry-to-mid-range DX DSLR with a vari-angle screen. With a 16.2MP CMOS sensor and articulating display, it brought flexible shooting angles to budget Nikon users. It was positioned between the basic D3100 and the enthusiast D7000.
Key features include the 16.2MP sensor, 11-point AF system with 1 cross-type, vari-angle 3-inch screen, 4fps burst, 1080p video, and built-in effects modes. The body is compact polycarbonate with a comfortable grip.
The D5100 was praised for the vari-angle screen and good image quality from the 16MP sensor. It is criticised for the basic 11-point AF and lack of advanced controls. The D5200 improved to 24MP and 39-point AF; the D5300 added Wi-Fi.
Very cheap used. Check the vari-angle screen hinge, shutter count, and AF accuracy. The 16MP sensor is limiting but still produces good results. The D5300 or later is worth the modest premium for Wi-Fi and better resolution.
