Nikon's retro-styled full-frame DSLR — the Df with classic controls and D4 sensor.
The Nikon Df was released in 2013 as a unique retro-styled full-frame DSLR featuring the same 16.2MP sensor from Nikon's flagship D4. Its mechanical dials and classic design evoke the Nikon FM/FE era while providing modern digital capability. The Df was Nikon's most polarising camera — loved by purists for its tactile controls, criticised by some for its compromises.
Image quality is outstanding — the D4's full-frame 16.2MP sensor provides excellent low-light performance, dynamic range, and colour depth. The relatively modest megapixel count enables exceptional high-ISO performance — usable results well beyond ISO 12800. The 39-point AF system is capable. No video recording — the Df is stills-only by deliberate design choice.
Nikon F mount — compatible with virtually every Nikon lens ever made, including pre-AI lenses via the folding AI coupling tab. Weight is approximately 765 grams body only. Build quality is premium with magnesium alloy top and front covers. Weather sealed. The mechanical shutter speed dial, aperture coupling, and ISO dial provide direct, tactile control over exposure.
Available on the used market at moderate prices. Check shutter count, mechanical dials, and weather seal condition. The Df divides opinion — photographers who value the tactile shooting experience find it irreplaceable, while those wanting modern features find it limiting. The ability to mount pre-AI Nikon lenses is unique among digital Nikon bodies.
