Nikon's legendary mechanical SLR — the F2 professional body that defined an era.
The Nikon F2 is the second generation of Nikon's professional F-series film SLR, introduced in 1971 as the successor to the original Nikon F. The F2 was Nikon's primary professional camera for a decade and was widely used by photojournalists and documentary photographers through the 1970s.
The Nikon F2 uses the Nikon F bayonet mount for full compatibility with all F-mount lenses past and present, provides a mechanical cloth focal-plane shutter with speeds from 1 to 1/2000s plus bulb, accepts a variety of interchangeable viewfinders and motor drives, and uses standard 35mm film.
The F2 is fully mechanical — it operates without batteries (except for the meter). The modular design allows swapping viewfinders (photomic metered, standard DE-1, action finder), motor drives (MD-2, MD-3), and backs. It accepts all Nikon F-mount lenses including modern AF-S glass with full manual functionality.
Test shutter at all speeds — a fully mechanical camera should work without batteries, with the meter requiring batteries only for metering. Check viewfinder and metered prism operation if included. Test film transport and rewind. Inspect Nikon F mount for clean coupling.
