Nikon's first fully-motorised consumer AF SLR from 1987 — the N4004 in North America, bringing autofocus to the budget F-mount market.

The Nikon F401 (N4004S in North America, 1988) is an entry-level 35mm autofocus SLR from Nikon's late-1980s consumer lineup. It features 3-area multi-sensor AF and program automation modes. The F401 introduced AF to a budget tier that previously required manual focus, making Nikon's F-mount ecosystem accessible to casual photographers.

Light seals are a routine maintenance item on all F401 examples.
