Nikon's consumer autofocus film SLR — basic AF with matrix metering for the F-mount system.
The Nikon F601 (N6006 in North America) launched in 1990 as a consumer autofocus 35mm film SLR. It offered Nikon's matrix metering and autofocus capabilities in an affordable body — making Nikon AF technology accessible to the mass market.
Multi-program auto exposure with matrix metering. Autofocus with single and continuous modes. Built-in flash. Shutter speeds 30s to 1/2000s. Spot metering available. Compatible with AF and AI Nikkor lenses. Motor-driven film advance at 2fps.
35mm film format. Nikon F mount. Plastic body with metal mount. Built-in pop-up flash. LCD top panel. Hot shoe. Motor drive built in — no separate winder needed. Approximately 610g without lens.
Available used very cheaply — consumer film AF cameras have minimal collector value. The F-mount compatibility is the main attraction — works with virtually all Nikon AF lenses. Check for battery compartment corrosion and motor drive operation. A functional budget route to Nikon AF on film.
