Nikon's final manual-focus SLR masterpiece with hybrid mechanical/electronic shutter.
The Nikon FM3A, introduced in 2001 as the final member of the FM-series, is considered one of the greatest manual SLRs ever produced. Its unique hybrid shutter operates mechanically at 1/125s and above without a battery, and electronically from 1/125s to 8 seconds with battery power, combining the reliability of a mechanical camera with the precision of electronic control.
Nikon F bayonet mount, hybrid mechanical/electronic shutter (8 seconds to 1/4000s electronically, 1s to 1/250s mechanically without battery), centre-weighted TTL metering, aperture-priority AE and manual, titanium shutter curtains.
The FM3A is prized because it is simultaneously a capable modern camera (with long exposure electronic shutter speeds) and a fully functional mechanical camera when batteries fail. It accepts the full range of Nikon F-mount AI and AI-S lenses for metering. Only manufactured from 2001 to 2006, making it relatively rare compared to other FM-series bodies.
Test both mechanical (battery removed) and electronic modes. Verify hybrid shutter operation at speeds spanning the mechanical/electronic boundary (around 1/250s). Inspect the titanium shutter for damage. Check viewfinder and metering accuracy. Battery chamber should be clean. Light seals should be inspected.
