Classic Nikon macro lens from the pre-AI era, manual focus with excellent close-up sharpness.
The Nikon Micro Nikkor 105mm f/4 is one of Nikon's earliest dedicated macro lenses, introduced around 1970 as part of the pre-AI F-mount lineup. It was designed for scientific and close-up photography where flat-field sharpness matters more than speed, and it set the template for Nikon's long-running 105mm macro tradition.
Sharpness is outstanding at close distances, which is the lens's primary purpose. Stopped down to f/8 or f/11, it delivers excellent corner-to-corner performance on flat subjects. Bokeh is relatively smooth for the era. The maximum aperture of f/4 is modest but adequate for a macro lens where depth of field is always limited.
Nikon F mount, manual focus only. The filter thread is 52mm. Several versions exist spanning pre-AI, AI, and AI-S designations — ensure the aperture ring has been AI-converted if you plan to mount it on modern Nikon bodies. Weight is approximately 335 grams. Minimum focus distance reaches 0.5x magnification natively.
Fairly common on the used market, especially in Japan. Check for haze, fungus, and smooth helicoid operation — these lenses are over 50 years old. Ensure AI conversion if needed for your body. An excellent affordable macro option that produces lovely results adapted to mirrorless systems via simple F-mount adapters.
