Nikon's classic pre-AI wide-angle — the fast 28mm f/2 from the early Nikkor era.
The Nikon Nikkor-N Auto 28mm f/2 is a vintage wide-angle prime from Nikon's pre-AI era, introduced around 1967. It was one of the fastest 28mm lenses available at the time, offering f/2 speed in a compact package. The Nikkor-N designation indicates its 8-element optical formula. As a pre-AI lens, it requires AI conversion for safe use on modern Nikon bodies.
Optical performance is good for the vintage era. Sharpness is respectable from f/2 and very good by f/4. The wide f/2 aperture was unusual for 28mm lenses of this period. Colour rendition is warm and pleasant with the multi-coating of the era. Some versions show flare susceptibility due to earlier coating technology. Distortion is moderate barrel-type.
Nikon F mount, pre-AI specification — requires AI conversion for use on modern Nikon bodies to avoid damage to the metering tab. Filter thread is 52mm. Weight is approximately 220 grams — compact. Build quality is excellent with all-metal construction and a precise focus ring. The pre-AI aperture ring can damage modern bodies if not converted.
Available on the used market — ensure AI conversion has been done if intended for modern bodies. Check for haze, fungus, and confirm AI modification status. An interesting vintage wide-angle with faster-than-typical aperture. The later AI and AI-S versions of the 28mm f/2 are safer and more practical choices for digital-era use.
