Nikon's classic manual-focus 50mm f/1.4 — the gold standard Ai-S normal prime for film Nikon shooters.
The Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 Ai-S is Nikon's classic manual-focus fast standard prime, produced from the early 1980s. The Ai-S (Automatic Indexing-Shutter) designation provides full metering and programmed auto compatibility on compatible Nikon bodies.
Optically very good — sharp from f/2.8 with characterful rendering at f/1.4. The faster f/1.4 aperture provides more light and shallower DOF than the f/1.8 version. 7-element optical design. Manual focus with Nikon's characteristically smooth and precise helicoid action.
Nikon F mount with 52mm filter thread. Approximately 250g. Full-frame coverage. Ai-S coupling provides full compatibility on all Nikon manual and auto-exposure film bodies. Aperture ring with half-stop clicks. All-metal and glass construction. Minimum focus distance 45cm.
Common used at budget to mid-range prices. The f/1.4 commands a premium over the f/1.8 Series E. Check for oil on aperture blades — very common and causes sluggish operation. Works on digital Nikon DSLRs in manual mode and on Z bodies via FTZ adapter. A beloved classic.
