Nikon's AI-era fast fifty — the classic Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 that remains a staple for manual focus fans.
The Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI is a classic manual focus standard prime from Nikon's AI (Automatic Indexing) era, introduced around 1977. It was the affordable fast fifty in the Nikon lineup, offering excellent optical quality at a lower price and weight than the 50mm f/1.4. The AI coupling provides full metering on compatible Nikon bodies.
Optical performance is very good. Sharpness is good from f/1.8 and excellent by f/4. The simple optical design is well-optimised for the focal length. Bokeh is pleasant with seven aperture blades. Colour rendition is neutral and accurate with Nikon's multi-coating. This lens has earned a reputation for punching well above its price class optically.
Nikon F mount, AI specification. Filter thread is 52mm. Weight is approximately 160 grams — one of the lightest Nikon primes. Build quality is excellent with compact metal construction and a smooth, precise focus ring. The AI coupling tab provides automatic metering on bodies from the Nikon FM onwards. Also available in AI-S and later AF versions.
Very common and affordable on the used market. Check for smooth focus ring and clean optics. An outstanding manual focus fifty that remains popular with Nikon film shooters and mirrorless adapters alike. The pancake-like size makes it ideal for compact carry. The AI-S version adds linear aperture response for improved auto-exposure accuracy.
