Nikon's classic manual-focus 50mm f/1.8 pancake — the Series E compact standard lens, beloved by film shooters.

The Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 Ai-S is the compact 'pancake' version of Nikon's 50mm manual focus prime, released in 1985 with an extremely thin barrel profile of approximately 25mm — distinguishing it from the earlier longer AI-mount 50mm f/1.8. Manual focus only. Six elements in 5 groups. At 148g and 52mm filter thread. Seven aperture blades. 0.45m MFD.

The optical design uses 6 elements in 5 groups (double-Gauss Planar formula). Seven aperture blades. The 52mm filter thread is a Nikon heritage standard. At 148g the lens is very lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.45m. Manual focus only — no AF motor. Ai-S designation enables matrix metering on compatible Nikon F bodies. f/1.8 maximum aperture.

The Ai-S pancake profile is the lens's defining practical attribute: the approximately 25mm barrel depth creates a near-flush combination with any Nikon F body, approaching the compactness of a body cap. At 148g it adds minimal carry burden. The double-Gauss formula provides characteristic vintage 50mm rendering that is different from modern computer-designed AF primes.
