Nikon's classic manual-focus 50mm f/1.8 pancake — the Series E compact standard lens, beloved by film shooters.
The Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 Ai-S Pancake (Series E) is a compact manual-focus standard prime from 1980, part of Nikon's economy 'E' series. Despite its budget origins, it delivers surprisingly good optical quality and became a cult favourite for its pancake-like compact dimensions.
Optically good — sharp from f/4 with acceptable performance at f/1.8. The 50mm f/1.8 specification provides a versatile standard perspective with good low-light capability. Simple 5-element optical design. Manual focus with Nikon's characteristic smooth helicoid. Ai-S metering coupling.
Nikon F mount with 52mm filter thread. Weighs approximately 120g — exceptionally light and compact for a 50mm. Full-frame coverage. Ai-S coupling provides full metering on manual and aperture-priority bodies. Aperture ring with half-stop clicks. All-metal construction despite 'economy' designation.
Very common and cheap used. Works on modern Nikon DSLRs in manual exposure mode and on Z bodies via FTZ adapter. The compact size is its main appeal — barely larger than a body cap. Check for oil on aperture blades — a common issue on these older Nikkors. A delightful manual-focus lens.
