Nikon's classic metered SLR — the Nikkormat with CdS TTL metering and solid metal build.
The Nikon Nikkormat FTN launched in 1967 as Nikon's metered consumer SLR — a less expensive alternative to the professional Nikon F. It introduced centre-weighted TTL metering with the Nikkor lens system in a solid, well-built body.
Centre-weighted CdS TTL metering — more accurate than external meters for most situations. Mechanical shutter from 1s to 1/1000s. Full compatibility with pre-AI, AI, and AI-S Nikkor lenses (with modification for AI coupling). Horizontal cloth shutter.
35mm film. Nikon F mount. Solid metal body at approximately 750g — built like a tank. CdS meter requires battery. Mechanical shutter operates without battery. Horizontal cloth focal plane shutter. The Nikkormat was Nikon's consumer line.
Available used very cheaply. The solid build is remarkable — these cameras survive decades of use. Pre-AI lens compatibility requires checking the coupling prong system. For vintage Nikon enthusiasts wanting a robust, metered film SLR. Check meter accuracy.
