The Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 launched in 2023 as a compact, affordable ultra-wide zoom for the Z-mount system. It provides professional f/2.8 speed across 17-28mm in a package significantly smaller and lighter than the Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S.

Optically very good — sharp across the frame at most focal lengths with well-controlled distortion. Not quite S-line quality in the corners but excellent for the size and price. Stepping motor AF is fast and quiet. Constant f/2.8 maintains consistent exposure.

Nikon Z mount with 67mm filter thread — notably accepts standard screw-on filters. Weighs just 460g — approximately half the weight of the Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S. No weather sealing. Internal zoom design. Minimum focus distance 19cm at 17mm.

Available used at mid-range prices. The 67mm filter thread that accepts standard ND and polarising filters is a major advantage for landscape photographers. The Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S is sharper and wider but much heavier. Excellent travel ultra-wide for Z-mount.
