Nikon's compact retractable kit zoom for Z-mount, covering a modest 24-50mm range.
The Nikon Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 was launched in 2020 as the most compact kit lens for the Nikon Z full-frame system. With a retractable design covering a modest 24-50mm range, it prioritises portability over zoom versatility. It was bundled with the Z5.
Optical quality is good for its size with sharp centre performance. The slow f/4-6.3 aperture limits low-light capability. There is no VR stabilisation so it relies on body IBIS. The retractable design makes it extremely compact when stored. Build is lightweight plastic.
Nikon Z mount for full-frame bodies, 52mm filter thread. The Z 24-70mm f/4 S offers a wider range with better optics at greater size and cost. The Z 24-120mm f/4 S is the premium alternative. The 24-50mm is the compact choice only.
Cheap used. Check the retractable mechanism and zoom ring. The narrow 24-50mm range limits versatility. Most users will want the 24-70mm f/4 S or 24-120mm f/4 S for more range. Adequate as a compact travel lens if portability is the priority.
