Nikon's updated flagship standard zoom with improved optics and Synchro VR support.
The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II was announced in August 2025 as a significant redesign of the original Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S (2019). The S II introduces Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) AF motors for near-silent, fast video-optimised focus and is the world's first internal-zoom f/2.8 24-70mm lens — the front element does not rotate or extend during zoom, maintaining balance on camera rigs. S-Line designation with ARNEO and Nano Crystal coatings for ghosting and flare control.
14 elements in 10 groups (versus 17/15 in the original S). Eleven rounded aperture blades (versus 9 in original). 77mm filter thread (versus 82mm in original). 675g (versus ~900g in original — approximately 25% lighter). Minimum focus distance 0.24m at 24-28mm / 0.33m at 70mm (versus 0.38m in original). Maximum magnification 0.32x. Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) AF motors. S-Line weather sealing. Nikon Z mount.
The S II represents a fundamental architectural change from the original: internal zoom eliminates barrel extension (critical for rig and drone use where front-heavy sway causes instability), and the reduced weight (675g vs ~900g) plus smaller 77mm filter thread make it substantially more portable. The SSVCM linear motors prioritise smooth, near-silent video focus pulls alongside fast stills tracking. For photographers using the original S, the S II offers the same focal range at a lighter weight with improved AF performance.
The S II is a 2025 new product — no used market examples at time of writing. The original Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S remains available used at lower prices for photographers who don't require the S II's internal zoom design or weight reduction. Condition checks when used examples appear: S-Line weather sealing at mount and barrel, SSVCM AF response, 77mm front element for coating marks, and internal zoom mechanism for smooth operation throughout the range.
