Nikon's constant-aperture standard zoom for Z-mount, a compact and sharp f/4 option.

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S was released in 2018 as the standard kit zoom in the original Z-mount S-Line launch lineup, providing a constant f/4 aperture across the professional standard zoom range. It pairs with the Z 14-30mm f/4 S as a matched constant-aperture two-zoom S-Line kit for the Z system. The collapsible barrel retracts for storage and extends for shooting — an unusual feature for a standard zoom that enables compact transport. S-Line weather sealing is built in throughout.

The optical design uses 14 elements in 11 groups. Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 72mm filter thread is the Z S-Line zoom standard. At 500g the lens is moderate for a constant-aperture standard zoom. Minimum focus distance of 0.30m at the wide end enables close wide-angle framing. S-Line weather sealing is built in. The retractable barrel collapses to reduce transport length — it must be extended before shooting. Constant f/4 aperture throughout the 24-70mm range.

The Z 24-70mm f/4 S covers the standard professional focal range with S-Line optical quality — the same resolution targets and correction standards that define the full S-Line lens range. For photographers coming from F-mount who used the AF-S 24-70mm f/4G, the Z version provides comparable coverage with Z-mount native performance. The constant f/4 aperture is one stop slower than the Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S; the trade-off is approximately half the weight and lower cost.

On the used market the Z 24-70mm f/4 S is available at affordable to moderate Z-mount standard zoom prices. Condition checks: S-Line sealing, retractable barrel extension mechanism for smooth, consistent operation, and front element condition. The Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S provides f/2.8 at approximately double the weight and price. The Z 24-120mm f/4 S extends the range to 120mm at similar constant aperture. Compatible with all Nikon Z-mount bodies.
