Nikon's compact pancake for Z-mount — SE retro styling matches Zfc, near-silent AF, outstanding value.
The Nikon Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 SE is the Special Edition variant of the compact Z-mount standard prime, sharing identical optics with the standard Z 40mm f/2 in a heritage-inspired silver and black cosmetic finish. The SE was released alongside the Nikon Z fc as a cosmetically matched set. At 170g and 52mm filter thread it is among the lightest native Z-mount primes. On FX full-frame the 40mm perspective sits between 35mm and 50mm; on DX bodies it provides a 60mm equivalent.
The optical design uses 6 elements in 4 groups with 2 aspherical elements. Nine aperture blades. The 52mm filter thread is a Nikon heritage size. At 170g the lens is very lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.29m. AF motor provides standard subject acquisition. No vibration reduction. f/2 maximum aperture. SE cosmetic finish is silver and black; optically identical to the standard Z 40mm f/2.
The 40mm perspective offers a slightly wider-than-standard framing — between 35mm moderate wide and 50mm normal — used for street photography, documentary, and everyday carry where 35mm looks wide or 50mm looks tight. At f/2 on full-frame the lens provides selective focus at portrait distances. The 0.29m MFD enables table-top and close-object photography without a dedicated macro lens. At 170g paired with the Z fc's compact body, the combination provides the closest Z-mount equivalent of a rangefinder-style everyday camera.
On the used market the Z 40mm f/2 SE is affordable as a lightweight native Z-mount prime. Condition checks: AF motor response, 52mm front element for marks, and SE cosmetic finish condition — the silver trim may show wear marks more visibly than a black-finish lens. The optical performance is identical to the standard Z 40mm f/2. Compatible with all Nikon Z-mount FX (full-frame) and DX (APS-C) bodies.
