Nikon's ultra-fast reference-grade portrait prime for the Z system, rivalling medium format rendering.
The Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S was released in 2020 as the fastest standard prime in the Z-mount S-Line lineup, providing f/1.2 maximum aperture — two thirds of a stop faster than the Z 50mm f/1.8 S — with the optical corrections required at such a wide aperture across the full frame. At 1,090g it is the heaviest Nikon Z-mount prime, reflecting the large glass elements needed to achieve f/1.2 with S-Line optical quality across the full frame. S-Line weather sealing is built in throughout.
The optical design uses 17 elements in 15 groups. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh at wide apertures. The 82mm filter thread is the Z-mount S-Line professional prime standard. At 1,090g the lens is substantial for a prime — heavier than many professional zooms. Minimum focus distance of 0.45m. S-Line weather sealing is built in. ARNEO and Nano Crystal coatings minimise ghosting and flare at wide apertures. The 17-element formula provides the optical correction required to deliver S-Line performance at f/1.2.
The f/1.2 maximum aperture provides subject separation and low-light capability that the Z 50mm f/1.8 S cannot match: one full stop more light gathering, and a depth of field at any given subject distance that is substantially thinner. At 0.45m minimum focus distance and f/1.2, the background separation on portrait subjects is pronounced. The weight premium over the f/1.8 S is significant — 1090g vs 415g — making the f/1.2 S primarily a choice for photographers who specifically require the widest aperture and are willing to carry the extra weight.
On the used market the Z 50mm f/1.2 S commands a premium as the widest-aperture Z-mount S prime. Condition checks: S-Line sealing at the mount, front 82mm element for any marks, and AF response. The Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S provides excellent image quality at f/1.8 at less than half the weight and cost — the f/1.2 premium is justified only where the additional aperture is specifically needed. Compatible with all Nikon Z-mount bodies.
