Nikon's compact full-frame 50mm f/1.4 for Z-mount — sharp, lightweight, and fast-focusing.
The Nikon Z 50mm f/1.4 launched in 2024 as a more affordable alternative to the Z 50mm f/1.2 S. It provides a fast standard prime with modern optical design for the Nikon Z mirrorless system at a much more accessible price point.
Optically excellent — sharp from f/1.4 in the centre with very good corner performance by f/2.8. Smooth and pleasant bokeh rendering. Fast and quiet stepping motor autofocus with excellent eye-detect AF tracking. Minimal focus breathing.
Nikon Z mount, full-frame coverage. 62mm filter thread. Approximately 420g — compact for a fast 50mm. Minimum focus distance 40cm. No weather sealing claims from Nikon. Metal mount with plastic barrel construction. Control ring on the barrel.
Limited used availability as a 2024 release. The Z 50mm f/1.8 S is cheaper and almost as good optically. The Z 50mm f/1.2 S is the ultimate but at 3x the price and weight. Excellent everyday prime for Z-mount shooters wanting speed without bulk.
