Nikon's essential Z-mount standard prime with S-Line quality and compact design.
The Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S was released in 2018 as the standard prime anchor of the original Z-mount S-Line launch lineup, alongside the Z 35mm f/1.8 S and Z 24-70mm f/4 S. It applies the S-Line optical formula and weather sealing standard to the normal prime format — a 50mm perspective with f/1.8 maximum aperture, internal focusing, and AF performance matched to the Z body's subject tracking. At 415g and 62mm filter thread it is compact for an S-Line prime.
The optical design uses 12 elements in 9 groups. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 62mm filter thread is the Z S-Line standard prime size. At 415g the lens is moderate for an S-Line normal prime. Minimum focus distance of 0.40m. S-Line weather sealing is built in. The f/1.8 maximum aperture provides subject separation and low-light performance suited to portrait, street, and documentary photography. ARNEO and Nano Crystal coatings minimise ghosting.
The Z 50mm f/1.8 S establishes the reference normal prime optical standard for the Z system: the S-Line formula is corrected for on-sensor performance without the mirror-box constraints of F-mount design. On the full-frame Z bodies the 50mm perspective is the closest to human perception at normal viewing distance, making it the default reference focal length for portraiture, documentary, and general photography. The f/1.8 aperture provides practical subject separation and available-light capability in the standard event and street context.
On the used market the Z 50mm f/1.8 S is available at moderate prices as the standard Z-mount normal prime. Condition checks: S-Line sealing, AF response for smooth continuous tracking, and front element condition. The Nikon Z 50mm f/1.2 S provides the widest-aperture option at significantly higher cost and weight. The Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 provides a more compact, affordable alternative at slightly shorter focal length. Compatible with all Nikon Z-mount bodies.
