Nikon's lightweight S-line 600mm — Phase Fresnel optics for dramatic weight reduction with VR.
The Nikon Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S was released approximately 2022 as a compact super-telephoto prime for Nikon Z-mount full-frame using a Phase Fresnel (PF) element. Sixteen elements in 12 groups including a PF element. Nine aperture blades. 46mm drop-in filter slot (no front thread). At approximately 2,265g. 5.0m MFD. VR rated 5.5 stops.
Sixteen elements in 12 groups (Phase Fresnel element; SR, ED, Nano Crystal Coat). Nine aperture blades. 46mm drop-in filter slot — no front filter thread. At approximately 2,265g. Minimum focus distance of 5.0m. SWM for fast AF. VR rated 5.5 stops. f/6.3 maximum aperture. Full-frame coverage. Nikon Z S-line mount.
The Phase Fresnel (PF) element enables the Z 600mm f/6.3 to weigh approximately 2,265g versus the 3,800g+ of conventional 600mm telephoto designs: PF uses diffraction rather than refraction for one element group, dramatically reducing length and weight at long focal lengths. The S-line designation provides dust and drip resistance, fluorine-coated front element, and Nano Crystal Coat.
On the used market the Nikon Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S is available at Z-mount super-telephoto pricing. Condition checks: SWM AF response, VR engagement, PF element condition (sensitive to direct light sources), 46mm drop-in slot. No front filter thread. Compatible with Nikon Z full-frame bodies.
