Nikon's lightweight S-line 600mm — Phase Fresnel optics for dramatic weight reduction with VR.
The Nikon Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S launched in 2023 using Phase Fresnel (PF) technology — the same approach as the revolutionary 300mm f/4 PF — to achieve 600mm reach at just 1390g. It completely changed expectations for 600mm prime weight.
Optically very good — the PF element enables a remarkably compact optical design while maintaining S-line quality. VR provides 5.5 stops with Synchro VR on compatible bodies. Dual stepping motor AF for precise tracking. The f/6.3 requires good light.
Nikon Z mount with 95mm filter thread. Just 1390g — less than half the weight of conventional 600mm f/4 primes. Full S-line weather sealing. 1.4x TC compatible for 840mm f/9. OLED display. Arca-Swiss tripod foot.
Available used at professional prices. The PF technology transforms 600mm from a tripod-only focal length to a handheld possibility. The 400mm f/4.5 VR S uses similar technology. The f/6.3 limits low-light use. For wildlife photographers wanting handheld 600mm.
