Nikon's S-line portrait prime for Z-mount — exceptional sharpness wide open with weather-sealed build.

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S was released in 2020 as the portrait prime anchor of the Z-mount S-Line lens lineup, providing the classic 85mm portrait perspective with f/1.8 maximum aperture and S-Line optical corrections for on-sensor performance without the mirror-box constraints of F-mount designs. At 470g and 67mm filter thread it is compact for an S-Line portrait prime. S-Line weather sealing is built in. ARNEO and Nano Crystal coatings minimise ghosting at wide apertures.

The optical design uses 12 elements in 8 groups, including two ED elements. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 67mm filter thread is the Z S-Line prime standard for portrait focal lengths. At 470g the lens is light for an f/1.8 portrait prime. Minimum focus distance of 0.8m. S-Line weather sealing is built in. f/1.8 maximum aperture. ARNEO and Nano Crystal coatings minimise ghosting and flare at wide apertures. Internal focusing maintains constant barrel length.

The 85mm perspective on Z-mount full-frame bodies provides the classic head-and-shoulders portrait compression and subject-background separation. The S-Line optical corrections at f/1.8 provide wide-open sharpness across the full frame that the F-mount era could not achieve with equal lens compactness — the Z-mount's shorter flange distance enables more complex correction without the mirror-box dimensional constraints. The 470g weight makes it practical for extended portrait sessions.
