Nikon's compact retractable DX kit zoom for Z-mount, the standard bundle lens for Z50 and Zfc.
The Nikon Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR was released in 2021 as the retractable kit zoom for the Nikon Z DX APS-C system, bundled with the Z50 and Zfc. The retractable design collapses to approximately 32mm length for transport, enabling a pocket-compact combination with the flat-bodied Zfc. Vibration Reduction is built in — a practical addition at this entry price point that the full-frame Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 kit lens lacks. On DX bodies the 24-75mm equivalent provides standard wide-to-normal everyday coverage.
The optical design uses 9 elements in 7 groups, including four aspherical and one ED element. Seven aperture blades produce acceptable out-of-focus rendering. The 46mm filter thread is specific to this lens and requires a step-up ring for standard filter sizes. At 135g the lens is one of the lightest APS-C zooms available; paired with the Z50 or Zfc the total kit is well under 500g. Minimum focus distance of 0.2m at 24mm enables informal close-up work. Vibration Reduction is built in. Variable aperture runs from f/3.5 at 16mm to f/6.3 at 50mm. The retractable barrel extends to the shooting position and locks against accidental collapse.
The Z DX 16-50mm VR's practical role is as the lightest and most compact Z DX kit option. The retractable design produces the smallest possible profile for casual carry; the assembled shooting configuration is compact. VR is useful at the 50mm end in lower light — indoor and low-ambient conditions where f/5.6-6.3 requires slower shutter speeds that VR helps stabilise. For photographers prioritising a compact, pocketable Z DX kit for travel and everyday use, the 16-50mm VR achieves that at the lowest weight and cost in the Z DX lens range.
On the used market the Z DX 16-50mm VR is widely available at low prices as the primary Z DX kit lens. Condition checks: retractable barrel extension and lock mechanism, VR engagement, AF response across the focal range, and front element for marks. The 46mm filter thread requires step-up rings for standard filter sizes. The Nikon Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR provides substantially extended reach and better optical quality at a moderate premium. Compatible with all Nikon Z-mount DX bodies; usable on Z-mount full-frame bodies in DX crop mode.
