Nikon's compact Z-mount macro — 50mm f/2.8 with 1:1 magnification for everyday and close-up photography.
The Nikon Z MC 50mm f/2.8 launched in 2021 as a compact macro lens for Nikon Z-mount, providing 50mm at f/2.8 with true 1:1 macro magnification. The shorter focal length makes it more compact than the 105mm MC but with a closer working distance at macro distances.
Optically very good — sharp at macro distances and decent for general 50mm use. The 50mm focal length means shorter working distance at 1:1 than the 105mm — your lens is very close to the subject. Stepping motor AF is fast and quiet. Good for products and flat-lay photography.
Nikon Z mount with 46mm filter thread. Weighs just 260g — remarkably light for a macro. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 16cm at 1:1 magnification. Not S-line — positioned as an affordable macro. Control ring on barrel. Plastic construction.
Available used at budget prices — excellent value for a Z-mount macro. The short working distance at 1:1 can be problematic for living subjects. The Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S is optically superior with more working distance. Good as a compact everyday 50mm that doubles as a macro lens.
