Nikon's entry-level full-frame Z-mount mirrorless with IBIS and dual card slots.
The Nikon Z5 was released in July 2020 as the entry-level full-frame option in Nikon's Z-mount mirrorless lineup, positioned below the Z6 II and Z7 II. It offers the Z-mount's full-frame sensor coverage and native lens compatibility at the lowest price point in the system, with weather sealing and dual SD card slots that distinguish it from competing entry full-frame mirrorless bodies at launch. The compromises relative to the Z6 II are primarily the lower burst rate, more limited 4K, and less powerful IBIS.
The 24.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor pairs with the EXPEED 6 processor. At 4.5fps the burst rate is slower than the Z6 II's 14fps — suited for portraiture and events rather than sustained action. 4K video records at up to 30fps with a 1.7x crop from the full-frame sensor; full-width 4K was not included as a cost-saving measure. The 5-axis IBIS is rated at 5 stops body-only. Battery life is rated on the EN-EL15c. At approximately 590g with battery and card the body is compact for full-frame mirrorless. Dual SD/SDHC/SDXC slots (UHS-II compatible) provide backup and overflow without the CFexpress requirement of higher-tier Z bodies.
The Z5's practical case is full-frame sensor quality and Z-mount native lens access at a lower price than the Z6 II, with dual SD slots that benefit photographers needing card redundancy. Weather sealing makes it suitable for outdoor use in variable conditions. The 4K crop limits video production utility — users prioritising 4K video in the Z system are better served by the Z6 II. IBIS at 5 stops provides useful handheld assistance for stills and moderate video. The Z-mount compatibility enables use of the full native Z-mount lens range.
On the used market the Z5 represents accessible full-frame Z-mount entry. Condition checks: IBIS operation, both SD card slot contacts, weather sealing at the mount and body, and shutter mechanism. The EN-EL15c battery is shared with the Z6 II, Z7 II, and D850 — a broad and available battery family. The Nikon Z6 II is the upgrade for photographers needing uncropped 4K and faster burst. Compatible with all Z-mount native lenses and via FTZ or FTZ II adapter with the full Nikon F-mount lens catalogue.
