Nikon's professional mirrorless flagship, matching the D6 for speed with mirrorless advantages.
The Nikon Z9 was announced in October 2021 as Nikon's professional flagship mirrorless camera and the first Nikon body without a mechanical shutter, operating entirely on an electronic shutter using the stacked CMOS sensor's fast readout to minimise rolling shutter artefacts. The 45.7MP stacked CMOS provides the readout speed required for 20fps RAW burst and 120fps high-speed capture. 4K internal recording at up to 60fps in 12-bit N-RAW and 8K up to 30fps, combined with D6-level weather sealing, positioned it as Nikon's most capable body at launch.
The 45.7MP full-frame stacked CMOS provides fast readout for electronic-shutter-only operation. The 493-point phase-detection AF covers 90% of the frame with subject recognition for humans, animals, birds, aircraft, and vehicles. Burst runs at 20fps RAW, 30fps JPEG, and 120fps at approximately 11MP. 4K video records at up to 60fps in 12-bit N-RAW internal; 8K at up to 30fps. Professional-grade dust and moisture sealing equivalent to the D6 is built in. Battery life approximately 740 shots using the EN-EL18d, body weight approximately 1,340g with battery and card, dual CFexpress Type B card slots.
The Z9's practical distinctions are the no-mechanical-shutter design and the stacked sensor's readout speed. No mechanical shutter eliminates shutter wear and provides silent shooting for any subject; the stacked CMOS readout minimises rolling shutter artefacts at fast subject speeds that slower electronic shutters cannot avoid. At 20fps RAW with 90% PDAF coverage the Z9 covers professional sports and wildlife at the tracking depth of Nikon's D6 reference standard. Firmware updates post-launch added video features including removal of recording time limits. 8K internal recording supports broadcast and high-resolution editorial motion work.
The Z9 is Nikon's current professional flagship and holds value accordingly. Condition checks: electronic shutter operation and blackout characteristics in burst, dual CFexpress slot contacts, weather sealing at body seams and port covers, and EN-EL18d battery health. No mechanical shutter means no actuations-based wear indicator — assess body condition from external marks and usage context. The Nikon Z8 (2023) provides the same sensor and processing in a lighter body using a different battery system at a lower price. Compatible with all Nikon Z-mount lenses and F-mount lenses via the FTZ adapter.
