Nikon's retro-styled full-frame mirrorless combining heritage design with modern Z-mount technology.
The Nikon Zf was released in September 2023 as a retro-styled full-frame Z-mount mirrorless camera, adopting the visual design language of Nikon's FM-series film cameras with physical top-plate dials for ISO, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. Underneath the retro aesthetic it uses the same 24.5MP BSI CMOS sensor as the Z6 II, with additional Deep Learning subject recognition for nine categories — an improvement over the Z6 II's subject detection capabilities. Dust and drip resistance is built in.
The 24.5MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor pairs with the EXPEED 7 processor. The 273-point phase-detection AF system provides subject tracking with Deep Learning recognition for humans, animals, birds, aircraft, and vehicles. Mechanical shutter burst runs at 14fps; electronic shutter at 30fps. 4K video records at up to 30fps in 10-bit H.265. 5-axis IBIS is built in. Dust and drip resistance covers the body. Body weight approximately 630g with battery and card, single CFexpress Type B / XQD card slot.
The Zf's practical combination is the Z6 II's sensor and AF performance in a body with significantly improved subject recognition and a distinctive design that appeals to photographers who prefer physical dial controls over electronic mode selection. The retro design is not purely aesthetic — physical dials for key exposure parameters provide direct, tactile control without menu navigation. The single card slot (CFexpress/XQD) is the primary professional workflow limitation compared to dual-slot bodies.
On the used market the Zf is available at a premium over the Z6 II, reflecting the design appeal and updated AF. Condition checks: IBIS operation, card slot contacts, dust/drip sealing, and the top-plate dials for smooth, consistent click operation. The Z6 III (2024) provides phase-detect improvements at a higher price. The Z6 II is available at lower prices with the same sensor but older AF subject recognition. Compatible with all Nikon Z-mount lenses and F-mount lenses via the FTZ adapter.
