Refined Olympus compact DSLR from 2008 with face detection AF and improved live view, ultra-small interchangeable lens camera.
The Olympus E-420 is an updated compact Four Thirds DSLR from 2008 that improved upon the E-410 with face detection autofocus, improved live view performance, and a slightly refined body design. It maintained the E-410's claim as one of the smallest DSLRs while adding features that improved everyday shooting convenience.
The face detection AF was a significant addition for family and social photography, automatically identifying and focusing on faces in the frame. The improved live view system provided faster autofocus during LCD composition, and the 10-megapixel Live MOS sensor delivered clean images with Olympus's pleasant colour reproduction.
Build quality remains compact and lightweight, with the E-420 being fractionally refined in ergonomics over the E-410. The camera retains the dust reduction system, interchangeable Four Thirds lens mount, and the compact dimensions that made the E-4xx series notable in the DSLR market.
The E-420 has minimal used market value but represents a slight improvement over the E-410 at similar prices. The face detection and improved live view made it more practical for casual family photography, though both models are now thoroughly superseded by Micro Four Thirds mirrorless alternatives.
