Olympus's upper-entry Four Thirds DSLR — the E-520, 10MP, IBIS, Live View, 2008.
The Olympus E-520 was released in 2008 as an upper-entry Four Thirds DSLR, an update to the E-510 that added and refined features for enthusiasts and students. It sat above the compact E-4xx bodies and below the E-30 in the E-System range.
The E-520 is a Four Thirds digital SLR with a 10-megapixel Live MOS sensor in the four-thirds format and a Four Thirds lens mount. It has an optical pentamirror viewfinder, in-body image stabilisation, Live View on a fixed rear screen, and face-detection autofocus in Live View. It is a stills body with a focal-plane shutter and no video recording.
In-body stabilisation working with any mounted lens makes it a practical general-purpose and travel body, and the combination of Live View and a stabilised sensor helps handheld shooting in lower light. The 10MP resolution is adequate for prints, and the compact Zuiko Digital lenses keep the kit light, though high-ISO performance is limited by the smaller sensor.
When buying, check the shutter count, inspect the sensor for dust and stuck pixels, and test Live View and the fixed rear screen. Confirm the IBIS runs without rattle, check the card-door and battery-door latches, and verify the BLM-1 battery is obtainable. Its Live MOS colour is clean for its generation, but note the body has no weather sealing and that Olympus has ended E-System service, so condition is what you buy.
