Olympus's 7MP starter compact — 2007 38-114mm zoom, 2.5in LCD, xD storage, AA power; X-775 twin
The Olympus FE-210 was announced in January 2007 and shipped from February at about $150, an entry-level model in the FE series also sold as the X-775. It updated the FE line's beginner formula with more resolution while keeping the one-button, one-function control philosophy.
Its CCD delivers 7.1 megapixels through a 3x optical zoom equivalent to 38-114mm. A 2.5-inch LCD replaces any optical viewfinder, 15 scene modes cover situations from fireworks to self-portraits, and a digital image stabilisation mode attempts to curb blur. Movies record until the card is full, storage pairs internal memory with an xD-Picture Card slot, and two AA batteries provide power.
It suits first-camera buyers, kids and collectors of late CCD compacts: simple menus, cheap AA power and enough resolution for prints. The stabilisation is digital rather than optical, so telephoto shots in dim light still blur; outdoors and with flash in range it is an easy, dependable snapshooter.
AA cells keep it running without proprietary chargers, though NiMH rechargeables are wise given modest battery life. The discontinued xD card format is the main sourcing issue, so favour listings with a card included. Check the LCD for damage, the zoom for grinding, and the battery door and contacts for leak residue.
