Olympus's 2005 FE-line 5MP compact — 35-105mm equiv f/2.8-4.8 zoom, 2.0in LCD, xD storage; US name D-630 Zoom
The Olympus FE-5500 was a 5-megapixel digital compact released in May 2005, an early model of the FE line and sold in some markets under the Camedia badge. In the USA the same camera was marketed as the Olympus D-630 Zoom, so used listings appear under FE-5500, Camedia FE-5500 and D-630 for one and the same body.
A 5-megapixel 1/2.5in CCD delivers images up to 2560x1920 pixels through a 3x zoom equivalent to 35-105mm at f/2.8-4.8, with 4x digital zoom on top. The 2.0in LCD has 115,000 pixels, the slim body is just 24.3mm thick, and storage combines 14MB of internal memory with an xD-Picture Card slot. It shipped with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, charger, USB and AV cables and Olympus Master software.
The relatively bright f/2.8 wide end and simple automatic operation made the FE-5500 an easy family camera in its day, and today it appeals mainly to buyers exploring mid-2000s CCD compacts for their colour rendering. There is no manual exposure control, video capability is basic, and the small low-resolution screen shows its age.
Condition checks centre on the discontinued xD-Picture Card format — cards are scarce and expensive, and 14MB of internal memory is only a stopgap — plus the proprietary lithium-ion battery, which is twenty years old in most examples and often needs replacing along with a working charger. Test the retracting lens for errors, and inspect the LCD and battery contacts for corrosion.
