Olympus's super-telephoto zoom with built-in IS, covering a massive 200-800mm equivalent.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm f/5-6.3 IS launched in 2020, providing an extraordinary 200-800mm equivalent zoom range with built-in stabilisation. For wildlife and bird photographers, the MFT crop factor transforms this into a super-telephoto system that would cost five figures or more on full-frame.
Optical quality is good with sharp results at moderate focal lengths. The built-in IS cooperates with body IBIS for enhanced stabilisation at extreme focal lengths. Autofocus is driven by a linear motor and is adequate for birds in flight when paired with an OM-D E-M1 Mark III or OM System OM-1. Build is weather sealed.
Micro Four Thirds mount only, 72mm filter thread. Compatible with the MC-14 (1.4x) and MC-20 (2x) teleconverters extending reach to 1120mm equivalent. The 2x teleconverter reduces the already slow aperture to f/13 which limits practical use. The 1.4x at f/9 is more usable.
Good value used for the reach offered. Check IS operation, AF tracking performance with a moving target, and weather seal integrity. Test with your body to ensure AF speed is acceptable. The MFT system's super-telephoto advantage is most compelling with this lens.
