Olympus's updated flagship standard zoom for Micro Four Thirds — weather-sealed, sharp, and compact.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO II was released in 2021 as the second generation of Olympus's flagship standard zoom. Covering a 24-80mm equivalent range with a constant f/2.8 aperture, it is the professional workhorse lens for OM System and Olympus Micro Four Thirds cameras, offering excellent optics in a remarkably compact package.
Optical performance is outstanding for the format. Sharpness is excellent across the frame from wide open, with minimal softness even in the corners. The PRO II update improves close-focus performance and adds ZERO coating for superior flare resistance. Autofocus is fast and precise with a MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) drive that is virtually silent.
Micro Four Thirds mount. Filter thread is 62mm. Weight is approximately 382 grams — dramatically lighter than equivalent full-frame f/2.8 standard zooms. Full weather sealing with dust, splash, and freeze resistance to -10°C. Build quality is excellent with a metal barrel. The focus clutch mechanism allows instant switching between AF and MF.
Good availability on the used market as owners of the original version upgrade. Check for smooth zoom operation and clean optics. One of the strongest arguments for the Micro Four Thirds system — delivering f/2.8 standard zoom performance in a package half the size and weight of full-frame equivalents. The Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 is the main competitor.
