Olympus's fast wide-angle prime for MFT, a 24mm equivalent with premium optics.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2 was introduced in 2011 as Olympus's first premium MFT prime, providing a 24mm full-frame equivalent ultra-wide field of view with fast f/2 aperture in a compact metal-body design. The MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) linear motor enables quiet continuous autofocus for video. A manual focus clutch mechanism — snapping back from AF to MF position — provides tactile zone-focus operation via a marked distance scale on the barrel. The lens established the design language for subsequent Olympus premium MFT primes.
The optical design uses 11 elements in 8 groups, including one aspherical and two ED elements. Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh at f/2. The 46mm filter thread is shared with several compact Olympus and Panasonic MFT primes, enabling filter carry-over in a travel prime kit. At 130g the lens adds negligible weight to any MFT body. Minimum focus distance of 0.2m enables close framing at the 24mm equivalent perspective. There is no image stabilisation; in-body IBIS on compatible MFT bodies provides stabilisation. There is no weather sealing. The focus clutch enables zone focusing via a marked distance scale.
The 24mm equivalent perspective provides a standard ultra-wide field of view suited for street photography, architecture, and travel — wide enough for environmental context without extreme wide-angle distortion. At f/2 the lens provides subject separation and low-light capability unusual for an ultra-wide prime. The focus clutch is a practical tool for street photography: pre-focusing at a set distance and stopping down for zone focus is faster than AF acquisition for moving or unpredictable subjects. The 130g compact form enables a pocketable MFT kit.
On the used market the M.Zuiko 12mm f/2 is widely available at accessible prices. Condition checks: MSC motor response, focus clutch engagement and release, and front element for any marks. No weather sealing means pairing with a sealed MFT body does not protect the lens in rain. The Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 12mm f/1.4 provides a wider maximum aperture with weather sealing at higher cost. Compatible with all Micro Four Thirds bodies from Olympus, OM System, and Panasonic.
