Olympus's compact standard kit zoom for early PEN and OM-D bodies, with MSC autofocus.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R MSC is a compact standard zoom for Micro Four Thirds, launched around 2012. Covering a 28-84mm equivalent range, it was bundled with bodies like the E-PL3, E-PL5, and early OM-D models. The MSC designation indicates a Movie and Still Compatible focus motor for quiet video AF.
Optical quality is adequate for a kit lens with decent centre sharpness and typical corner softness. The MSC motor provides quieter autofocus than earlier versions, making it suitable for basic video work. Build is all-plastic and very lightweight. The lens is compact but not as small as the later motorised 14-42mm EZ pancake version.
Micro Four Thirds mount only, 37mm filter thread. This sits between the original 14-42mm and the later 14-42mm EZ which uses a motorised retractable design. The MSC motor was a significant improvement for video shooters. The Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II Mega O.I.S. is a comparable alternative.
Very cheap used. Check the MSC focus motor, zoom ring, and electronic contacts. The lens is adequate as a starter but most users will upgrade relatively quickly. The 14-42mm EZ pancake or the Olympus 12-45mm f/4 PRO are significant steps up in different directions.
