Olympus's compact 60mm-equivalent macro prime for MFT with 1.25x magnification.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 30mm f/3.5 Macro is a compact macro prime for Micro Four Thirds, launched around 2016. Providing 1.25x magnification at a 60mm equivalent focal length, it exceeds standard 1:1 reproduction and reaches into super-macro territory. Its tiny size makes macro photography accessible and portable.
Optical quality at the focus plane is sharp with good detail rendering at all magnifications. The 1.25x magnification reveals details invisible at standard 1:1. The minimum focus distance of 9.5cm means extremely close working distance which can shadow subjects. Build is tiny plastic at just 128g.
Micro Four Thirds mount only, 46mm filter thread. The Olympus 60mm f/2.8 Macro provides 1:1 at a longer working distance. The Panasonic Leica DG 45mm f/2.8 Macro is another MFT macro option. The 30mm's shorter focal length limits it for portraits but its size is unmatched.
Affordable used. Check AF operation at close focus and the front element for scratches. The very close working distance is both an advantage and limitation — lighting is difficult when the lens is centimetres from the subject. An excellent entry into macro photography for MFT shooters.
