The classic MFT portrait lens, sharp, fast, tiny, and outstanding value.
The M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8 is one of the most widely recommended lenses in the Micro Four Thirds system, launched by Olympus in 2011. It provides a 90mm equivalent focal length at f/1.8 — a classic portrait focal length with background separation that is uncommon at this price in any system. The combination of compact dimensions, predominantly metal construction, and strong optical performance made it an influential lens in demonstrating what the MFT format could deliver. It has remained in production without redesign since launch, a longevity that reflects the continued strength of its original specification.
The optical design uses 8 elements in 8 groups. The filter thread is 37mm — unusually small for the system; standard filter collections from larger lenses will not fit without a step-up ring. At 116g the lens is one of the lightest in the MFT system; minimum focus distance of 0.50m with maximum magnification of 0.11x suits portrait and general-purpose distances but does not reach dedicated macro territory. There is no built-in optical image stabilisation; the lens relies on in-body stabilisation from compatible Olympus and OM System bodies. Seven circular aperture blades produce smooth, rounded bokeh at wide apertures. Autofocus operates via the host body's contrast-detect or phase-detect system; performance is fast and accurate on modern OM-D and OM System bodies.
As a portrait lens the 45mm f/1.8 delivers smooth background separation at f/1.8, with the 90mm equivalent compression suiting head-and-shoulders framing naturally. Centre sharpness is excellent from wide open; corner performance is strong, and corners are rarely in the critical plane of focus at portrait distances. For street and general photography the 90mm equivalent is longer than a standard prime, which suits selective framing but limits wide environmental context. The 116g weight and compact form make it an unobtrusive and practical everyday lens. Minor vignetting at f/1.8 is corrected automatically on compatible bodies.
On the used market the 45mm f/1.8 offers excellent value and a straightforward buying decision. Condition checks should cover the front element for scratches, electronic contacts for corrosion, and AF accuracy. There is very little that fails on this lens: no IS mechanism, no zoom mechanism, and build quality above what the price suggests. The nearest MFT alternative is the Panasonic Lumix G 42.5mm f/1.7 ASPH, which offers slightly different rendering and built-in OIS. For MFT portrait photographers the 45mm f/1.8 remains one of the strongest value propositions in the system.
