The classic MFT portrait lens, sharp, fast, tiny, and outstanding value.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8 is one of the most celebrated lenses in the Micro Four Thirds system. Launched in 2011, it provides a 90mm equivalent focal length at f/1.8 making it a natural portrait lens. Its tiny size, low weight, and sharp optics made it an instant favourite and a strong argument for the MFT format.
Optical quality is exceptional with sharpness from wide open in the centre and a gradual falloff to the edges. Bokeh is smooth and creamy at f/1.8 with the 90mm-equivalent compression. Autofocus via the body's contrast-detect system is reasonably fast and accurate. Build is mostly metal with a quality feel that belies its small size.
Micro Four Thirds mount only, 37mm filter thread. The lens has been in continuous production since 2011 with no update which speaks to its enduring design. The nearest alternative is the Panasonic Lumix G 42.5mm f/1.7.
Outstanding value used. Check for autofocus accuracy, front element scratches, and dust inside the lens. There is very little that goes wrong with this lens. It is the single most recommended lens for MFT portrait shooters and a must-have for anyone in the system.
