Olympus's flagship ultra-wide zoom for MFT, a constant f/2.8 with no filter thread.
The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO was released in 2015 as Olympus's ultra-wide PRO zoom for the Micro Four Thirds system, providing a 14-28mm full-frame equivalent range with constant f/2.8 aperture. The protruding front element design means there is no standard filter thread — circular and screw-in filters cannot be attached directly, requiring clip-in filter systems for ND or polarising filter use. IP53 dust and splash resistance is built in to PRO standards. The 0.075m minimum focus distance is exceptionally close for an ultra-wide zoom.
The optical design uses 14 elements in 11 groups, including aspherical and ED elements. Seven aperture blades produce acceptable out-of-focus rendering. There is no standard filter thread — the front element design does not accommodate screw-in filters. At 534g the lens is the heaviest in the Olympus PRO prime and zoom lineup, reflecting the complex ultra-wide optical formula. Minimum focus distance of 0.075m enables extremely close foreground placement with full ultra-wide background context — a compositional capability unique in the MFT ultra-wide range. IP53 dust and splash resistance is built in.
The 14-28mm equivalent range and constant f/2.8 aperture cover the widest practical shooting scenarios in a single lens: architectural interiors at 14mm, environmental landscape at 20mm, and environmental portrait at 28mm. The f/2.8 maximum aperture enables interior photography in ambient light without flash. The 0.075m minimum focus enables foreground-to-background ultra-wide compositions with near subjects at 7.5cm from the front element. The absence of a filter thread is the primary practical constraint for landscape photographers who rely on circular polarisers or large-format ND filters.
On the used market the 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO is widely available at PRO-tier pricing. Condition checks: IP53 sealing at the zoom barrel and mount, front element for any scratches — it is exposed without filter protection — and focus ring for any damage. IP53 sealing requires a weather-sealed MFT body for full system protection. Third-party clip-in filter adapters are available for ND and colour filter use. Compatible with all Micro Four Thirds bodies from Olympus, OM System, and Panasonic.
